"Connectivity"

Leonardo Aguinaldo presents new works that breathe interconnectivity between the highland indigenous and the lowland contemporary Philippine cultures. They capture the essences of family, everyday life, colonial influences on culture, spirituality, religion, current events and fantasies. They are playful, sarcastic, and sensual.

They are about the people's instinctive capacity to resist the burdens of social hardships that are experienced in real life situations. One narrative links to the next, defining earthly and cosmic existence.  These large-scale rubber cut-outs are a series of diverse visual connections that confront the politics of survival in relationship to power struggles.

Connectivity is about being a family, being a Filipino, and finding what links them together in a country striving to become a whole nation.

Baguio-based artist Leonardo Aguinaldo studied Architectural Drafting in Baguio. In 2004, he won the grand prize in the ASEAN Art Award sponsored by Philip Morris Asia Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand. He was awarded the Thirteen Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2003. In 2007 Leonardo was commissioned by the Singapore Art Museum to create a work made of 135 pieces rubber puzzle play mats, with self-contained images executed in rubbercut that covered an entire 15 x 30 feet floor area. He participated in several international art exhibitions which include the Busan Biennale South Korea, International Open Air Exhibition, Kanagawa Prefecture in Yokohama, Japan and Nature Art in Korea. His solo exhibitions include Utterly Art Singapore, Songs of a People in South Korea, Subjects in 2006, and Ay-Apo in 2005. “Connectivity” is his 3rd Solo show at Galleria Duemila.
