“Emergent Energy”
Mandarin Oriental Manila
February 11-24, 2010
Galleria Duemila and the Mandarin Oriental Manila welcomes
the year of the Metal Tiger with Emergent Energy, a
three-man exhibition featuring Ramon Diaz, Cesar Caballero,
and Roberto Robles.
Featuring 16
pieces installed at the Captain’s Bar and the Clipper
Lounge, the exhibition is a powerful explosion of light and
color. “The theme is positive, expanding and aggressive – a
steady progress that assimilates everything that comes into
its fold and pushes forward,” says Silvana Diaz, exhibit
curator and art director of Galleria Duemila.
The
collaboration of the three artists was a serendipitous
happenstance – an example of the “perfect spot,” a founding
principle in Feng Shui that refers to a “location and axis
in time.”
“Though their
art is very different, they all expose the same principles
of visual harmony, dynamic energy in their works,” says Mrs.
Diaz.
In The
Conqueror, Mr. Diaz, a figurative artist and sculptor,
depicts the courage and fearlessness of a majestic feline
reigning over its dominion. To balance the proud feral grace
of the tiger, Mr. Diaz adds koi works to give a feeling of
peace, abundance and harmony.
A diptych by
abstractionist Mr. Robles, titled Tiger’s Iris and Tiger’s
Tail, represents the duality of the tiger, an animal that is
admired for both its ferocious power and its elegant wit.
According to the artist, Tiger’s Iris represents the mind –
the spirit of the cat as reflected in its eyes. Tiger’s
Tail, meanwhile, is the fluid movement and flexibility of a
predator stalking its prey.
In Your Eyes,
by Mr. Caballero, is the steady gaze of the tiger rendered
in vital and energetic strokes of cadmium red and deep
yellow, shades the evoke both the heraldry of Spain, the
land of Mr. Caballero’s birth, and the elemental colors of
earth and fire in Chinese astrology.
“As the Chinese
New Year starts with the symbol of the metal tiger, the
combination of elements is necessary in the creation of
metal. Life opens its way. The tiger is emerging from the
water, ready to pounce, resurgent in the space of the
canvas,” says Mr. Caballero.
Emergent Energy
is part of the Chinese Embassy’s New Year celebrations
hosted at the Mandarin Oriental Manila. Aside from the art
exhibition, the event features Chinese musicians, a
dumpling-making activity, and a cocktail buffet of Chinese
food.
Emergent Energy
runs from February 11 -24, 2010 at the Mandarin Oriental
Manila, Makati City, Philippines.
